Changing Lives

Daniel and Kristina McFeeters, a young couple in their early thirties, had a conviction to do mission work in Whitley City, Kentucky, population 1,111.  This town is the county seat for McCreary County which is the 19th poorest county in the United States with 38.8% of its population living below the poverty line.  The Lord impressed Daniel and Kristina that the way to serve this community is through health ministry, so they have conducted cooking classes for the past four and a half years.  During this time, participants have asked, “How can we purchase this delicious food?”  But without a commercial kitchen, it has been impossible to fulfill their request.

On June 11, 2014 the dream of opening a bakery and vegetarian café finally materialized.  Kristina’s Kitchen, as it is called, celebrated its official grand opening with ribbon cutting and door prizes.  There were at least 50 people in attendance, including the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Wendy Allen; the County Judge, Douglas Stephens; and a representative from Senator Mitch McConnell’s office, Donna Baker McClure.  Pastor Gary Shepherd offered an opening prayer.  Conference Evangelist Kieth Noll shared a brief message, and Pastor David Hartman, Conference Ministerial Director, gave the prayer of dedication and blessing for their ministry and business.  Then customers lined up to enjoy a tasty fare of vegetable soup, sandwiches, salads, and baked delights.

One of the guests shared how Daniel and Kristina have impacted her life.  Sharlotte Devine visited her doctor last September because of shortness of breath, lack of energy, and excessive weight.  The doctor prescribed a vegan diet with no salt, sugar, or refined foods.  Sharlotte exclaimed, “How can I do that!”  The doctor urged, “Just try it for three weeks.”  So Sharlotte gave it a try, but struggled to find appetizing recipes using only whole grains, brown rice, beans, vegetables, fruits, and soy or almond milk.  Then a friend told her about Kristina’s cooking classes held at the Nutrition Center in town.  Sharlotte and her family checked it out and were amazed at the simple food demonstrations and delicious food.  After following this prescribed diet for several months, Sharlotte no longer experiences shortness of breath or low energy and has dropped over 20 lbs.  Her family’s health has also remarkably improved.  She testifies, “Kristina’s cooking class was the turning point for us, it changed our meals and our lives.”  Now Sharlotte is excited that Kristina’s Kitchen has opened so she and her family can eat at a restaurant that serves a healthy menu.

To undo the heavy burdens, to reach out and make a difference in peoples’ lives, to touch people where they are at, and eventually point them to the cross, is what God is calling each and every one of us to do.  Will you use the gifts and talents God has entrusted to you?  If there was ever a time to let Jesus shine through you it is now!

Please pray for Daniel and Kristina that God will continue to bless and prosper their business and ministry.
